Pleasure boatingon the Moselle (with or without a motor) is only
allowed with a permit. The crafts must all bear an identification mark.
There is a speed limit of 30 km/h. This speed limit doesn’t concern:
• small crafts pulling one or more water-skiers
• small craft as long as the water stretch in view is free from any
user. In this case the speed is limited to 60 km/h.
But they have to reduce speed close to swimmers, campings and localities
in order to avoid the risk of hurting people in and on the water.
Jet skis must follow a clearly marked route and are only allowed
between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Exceptional timetables may be set in local
interests.
To pass weirs, small craft whose dimensions are smaller than those
of the lock (18 m long x 3,3 m wide and 1,5 m draught) must use
it, unless told otherwise by the lock-keeper (observe the signs for
entering the lock). Automatic locks, located between the barge locks
and the weir, can only be used during daytime, and must be operated
by the users themselves (use is free).

Canadian and kayak canoeists can expect easy to
moderate levels of difficulty in Luxembourg. The
rivers of the Ardennes region are particularly fine
territory for canoeists. The season starts at Easter,
and is then opened with an international rally.

Boats of 5.50 metres in length or less are admitted
by customs without any formalities. Folding
boats weighing less than 40 kg with a fixed cover
and that can be transported in a single piece can
be transported by Luxembourg Railways on a
bicycle ticket, Tel. 4990-4990.
It is generally possible to canoe on the easy stretches
of water throughout the year, provided that the
water level is high enough:
• Moselle (entire stretch from Wasserbillig to
Schengen, 37 km)
• Alzette (downstream from Hesperange)
• Lower-Sûre (from the confluence with the Alzette
in Ettelbruck to the confluence with the Moselle in
Wasserbilig). Closed from 16.7-30.9
• Protected zone II of the Upper-Sûre Lake (please
comply with the notices!)
The wild water stretches in the Ardennes are theoretically
navigable from 1 October to 31 March:
• Clerve (downstream from Clervaux)
• Wiltz (downstream from Wiltz)
• Our (downstream from Dasburg)
• Sûre (from Martelange to the confluence with
the Alzette in Ettelbruck)
Boating is prohibited on all other stretches
of water!
Degree of difficulty of waters:
Grade 1: easily navigable (sandbanks, minor
rapids, smaller regular waves, simple bends):
• Lower-Sûre from Ettelbruck to Wasserbillig
• Lower-Our from Vianden to the confluence with
the Sûre
Grade 2: slight difficulties (rapids with fast-flowing
water without obstacles, broad open navigable
passages, regular waves, spray-cover recommended):
• Upper-Sûre from Martelange to Ettelbruck
• Upper-Our from Dasbourg to Vianden
• Clerve from Wilwerwiltz to Kautenbach
• Wiltz from Merkholtz to Goebelsmühle
